Maurice Bolyer (December 1, 1920 – August 18, 1978), born Maurice Beaulieu, was a composer and musician known as “Canada's King of the Banjo”.

Bolyer was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada. Although proficient in a variety of string instruments and piano, he is best known for his work on the banjo, an instrument that Bolyer took up in his late teens.

Beginning in the 1940s, Bolyer appeared regularly on Canadian radio stations CKCW (Moncton, New Brunswick) and CKNX (Wingham, Ontario). Boyler joined the CBC Radio program ''The Tommy Hunter Show'' in 1963, continuing with the show when it moved to television in 1965. Bolyer also appeared as a guest on the Lawrence Welk and Arthur Godfrey shows in the United States.

Bolyer was inducted posthumously into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989.

Amy Jo Johnson (born October 6, 1970) is an American actress, singer, songwriter, musician and gymnast.

She is best known for her roles in the TV series ''Flashpoint'', ''Wildfire'', ''The Division'', ''Felicity'', and ''Mighty Morphin Power Rangers''. She also starred in television films including ''Susie Q'', ''Killing Mr. Griffin'', ''Perfect Body'', ''Sweetwater'', and ''Magma: Volcanic Disaster''.

Johnson released her first song, ''Puddle Of Grace'', when she was on ''Felicity''. Since then, she has released a few solo albums. As a volunteer, she has participated as a tutor for refugee children through the International Rescue Committee's summer program in the Bronx and made trips to Bosnia as a volunteer with the Global Children’s Organization.

For her role as Jules Callaghan on ''Flashpoint'', Johnson was nominated for the 2009 Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role.

Personal life

Johnson was born in Dennis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, a daughter of Greig Johnson, a car salesman, and his wife Christine, who managed a clothing store. She became interested in gymnastics and, after training for years, decided to aim for the Olympic Games. She reached Class One and participated in competitions hosted in the United States and Europe in uneven bars, vault, beam and floor. She was forced to abandon gymnastics following a severe injury.

Johnson is married to Oliver Giner. They have one daughter, Francesca Christine, born December 1, 2008.

Acting career

At the age of eighteen, after graduating from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Johnson moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. She attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and the American Musical and Acting Academy. She moved to Los Angeles to audition for her first part.

Johnson's first role was as Kimberly Ann Hart, the Pink Ranger, in the 1993 series ''Mighty Morphin Power Rangers''. She acquired the role within the first month of her main stay in L.A. Her gymnastics background was an advantage for her in fight scenes, as the Hart character was also an accomplished gymnast. Her martial arts skills were learned from choreographers in the studio. The series achieved unexpected success, and Johnson had a fair share of media exposure. Her appearances on the show jump-started her career and served as a positive influence for many younger viewers and fans. After she left the series in 1995, Johnson went on to star in the Disney Channel's ''Susie Q'' and the ''Saved by the Bell: The New Class'' episode "Backstage Pass" as Linda.

In 1997, she starred in NBC's adaptation of Lois Duncan's novel ''Killing Mr. Griffin'' as Susan McConnell and also played Andie Bradley, a gymnast with an eating disorder, in ''Perfect Body''. She also reprised her role as Kimberly Hart in ''Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie''. She jokingly stated in the ''I Love the '90s'' 1993 special that having been the Pink Power Ranger was something she would "never live down." When she was interviewed on ''The Sharon Osbourne Show'', Johnson said that ''Power Rangers'' was a "great first job." She also participated in the film ''Without Limits''.

In 1998, Johnson played the part of a vampire in ''Cold Hearts''. Soon after, she was invited to play Julie Emrick, a college freshman who becomes the best friend of the title character on The WB series ''Felicity'' (who was played by Keri Russell). She was in the series for two and a half years. Her character in the series was originally described as a dancer, but Johnson convinced the producers to change that to a singer and guitarist, which led Johnson to being able to perform "Puddle of Grace", a song she wrote. The song was added to the show's official soundtrack. Her talent in music also led her to star in ''Sweetwater: A True Rock Story'', a biography about Nancy Nevins and Sweetwater, who were the first band to play at the Woodstock festival.

Johnson then took roles in ''Interstate 60'', ''Pursuit of Happiness'', ''Infested'', and ''Hard Ground''. She also had guest starring roles on ''Spin City'' and ''E.R''. She starred as Stacy Reynolds in the fourth season of ''The Division''. She released her debut album, ''The Trans-American Treatment'', and performed in the Los Angeles area with "The Amy Jo Johnson Band". She released another album, ''Imperfect'', in March 2005.

In 2006, Johnson co-starred in ''Magma: Volcanic Disaster'', a Sci-Fi Channel telefilm. Johnson also was on ABC Family's original show ''Wildfire'' as Tina Sharp, the villain of the first season. She also starred a few episodes of ''What About Brian'', as Karen, Brian's girlfriend. She has also taken on roles in two independent films, ''Veritas, Prince of Truth'' and ''Islander''. Johnson also starred in the Lifetime Television movie ''Fatal Trust''.

In December 2007 she contributed guest vocals to Koishii & Hush's cover of The Cars track "Since You're Gone", which was released as a single.

Beginning in 2008, Johnson became a cast member of ''Flashpoint'' as Jules Callahan, a member of the Strategic Response Unit of the Toronto Police service. The series premiered on CTV and CBS on July 11, 2008. Her song "Dancing In-Between" was featured on ''Flashpoint'' and was released as a single. The show received 19 nominations at the 24th Gemini Awards, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for Johnson.

Joseph Edmund "Jo" Johnson (born 23 December 1971) is a Conservative Party politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Orpington since the general election in May 2010. In January 2012, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mark Prisk, Minister of State for Business and Enterprise.

Family, early life and schooling

Johnson is the youngest of four children born to former Conservative MEP Stanley Johnson and artist Charlotte Johnson Wahl (née Fawcett), the daughter of Sir James Fawcett, a prominent barrister and president of the European Commission of Human Rights. He is the younger brother of Boris, the Mayor of London; Rachel, a writer and journalist; and Leo, an entrepreneur and film-maker.

He began his schooling in Brussels, at the European School in Uccle, before attending The Hall School in Hampstead, London, Ashdown House School in East Sussex, and then Eton College. In 1991, he went up to Balliol College, Oxford to read Modern History. He was a Scholar at Balliol, edited ''Isis'', the Oxford University student magazine, and was awarded a First Class degree in both Honour Moderations (June 1992) and Finals (Honour School, June 1994).

A fluent French speaker, he did postgraduate study on the continent and has degrees from two further leading European universities, gaining an MBA from INSEAD in 2000 and a licence spéciale with distinction in 1995 from the Institut d’Etudes Européennes at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, where he was a Wiener-Anspach Fellow.

Journalistic career

Johnson joined the ''Financial Times'' in 1997, after working as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank and had two foreign postings, as Paris correspondent between 2001–2005, and then as South Asia Bureau Chief based in New Delhi from 2005 until 2008. Johnson then became an Associate Editor of the Financial Times and Head of the Lex Column, one of the most influential positions in British financial journalism. Previous 'Heads of Lex' include Nigel Lawson, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Martin Taylor, former chief executive of Barclays Bank, and Richard Lambert, director-general of the Confederation of British Industry. Johnson left the Lex column in April 2010.

In April 2009, Johnson was named Foreign Journalist of the Year (Print) in India's leading media awards, the Indian Express Excellence in Journalism Awards. His books include the co-authored ''The Man Who Tried To Buy the World'' (Penguin, 2003) which was published in France as ''Une faillite française'' by Albin Michel in 2002.

A regular commentator on radio and television, he frequently speaks in public on the rise of India and the new world order, as well as on the UK political economy and financial affairs. He has received awards from a range of organisations, including most recently Amnesty International, the Foreign Press Association, the Society of Publishers in Asia and The Indian Express’s 2009 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

Most recently he has co-edited, with Dr Rajiv Kumar (Secretary General, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) ''Reconnecting Britain and India: Ideas for an Enhanced Partnership'' (Academic Foundation 2011).

Political career

On 12 December 2009, Johnson was selected as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for the constituency of Orpington from a shortlist of six contenders. He won the seat, tripling the Conservative majority to over 17,000.

Prior to his appointment as PPS in January 2012, Jo served as an elected member of the Public Accounts Committee, a select committee of the House of Commons. It is responsible for scrutinising government expenditures to ensure they are effective and represent value for money.

Personal life

Jo Johnson lives in London with his wife, Amelia Gentleman, a journalist for ''The Guardian'' and the daughter of artist and designer David Gentleman. They have two children.

Andre Jamal Drummond (born August 10, 1993) is an American college basketball player for the University of Connecticut. He was one of the top rated basketball players in the class of 2012, but announced his intention to attend the University of Connecticut in the fall of 2011.

High school career

From St. Thomas More in Oakdale, Connecticut, Drummond was one of the most dominating centers in high school basketball. He spent two years at St. Thomas More and led the team to the national prep championship in 2011. He graduated in the spring that year.

He was rated as the #1 player in the class of 2012 by ''ESPN'' and NBADraft.net, while being ranked #2 player by Rivals.com and Scout.com.

In the summer of 2010, Drummond was a member of the gold medal winning United States team at the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship. He helped lead team USA to a 111-80 victory over Poland in the gold medal game.

College career

Drummond initially declared he would spend a post-graduate year at Wilbraham & Monson Academy in 2011–12. Two weeks later on August 26, 2011, he announced via Twitter that instead intended to attend the University of Connecticut. According to ''ESPN'', the decision "created a media frenzy due to the sheer surprise." Drummond had also been considering attending Kentucky, Louisville, Georgetown, or West Virginia. Connecticut did not have any scholarships to offer Drummond until center Michael Bradley agreed to surrender his scholarship and apply for financial aid.

NBA career

Drummond declared for the 2012 NBA Draft on April 12, 2012. In May 2011, ''ESPN'' wrote he has "a chance to be the No. 1 overall player in any draft he's involved with."

Player profile

Drummond possesses NBA-like size and can rebound and block shots. In 2011, ''ESPN'' wrote that he has a developing offensive game and the ability to pass the ball in a high-low setting or with his back to the basket. He can defend in the low or high post, and he is an intimidator. Drummond needs to become comfortable with his size, and avoid overaggressive play which results in foul calls.

Philip Anthony Esposito, OC (born February 20, 1942) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. He is an Honoured Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and is considered to be one of the best to have ever played in the National Hockey League. Phil is the older brother of Tony Esposito, a goaltender who, like Phil, is a Hall-of-Famer.

After retiring as a player, Esposito served as a head coach and general manager for the New York Rangers before co-founding the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was the principal studio analyst for the NHL on Fox circa 1995-1998. He now serves as Tampa Bay's radio color commentator.

Biography

Minor league

Esposito signed with the Chicago Black Hawks as a teenager and was assigned to the Sarnia Legionnaires Jr. 'B' hockey team for the 1960-61 season. In just 32 games with the Legionnaires he scored 47 goals and 61 assists, for 108 points. It was a scoring pace of 3.3 points per game. In a playoff game, he scored 12 points in one game as the Legionnaires advanced to the Western Ontario final before being eliminated. After a sparkling junior season with the St. Catharines Teepees of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1962, Esposito spent two seasons with Chicago's minor league affiliate, the St. Louis Braves, scoring 90 points in his first season and 80 points in only 46 games in his second.

Chicago Black Hawks

Midway through the 1964 season, Esposito was called up to the parent Black Hawks to make his NHL debut. Centering for the great Bobby Hull beginning in the 1965 season, he proved himself a quality playmaker, twice finishing amongst the league-leading scorers over the next three seasons.

Boston Bruins

In 1967, he was dealt to the Boston Bruins in a blockbuster trade, along with Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield. While the hitherto unremarkable Hodge and Stanfield became stars in the black-and-gold, Esposito blossomed into the greatest scorer of his day, becoming the first NHL player to score 100 points in a season with 126 in the 1969 season. He would top the "century" mark six times in all, including five consecutive seasons between 1971 and 1975 (plus a 99-point season in 1970), capturing the Art Ross Trophy in 1969 and 1971–74 as the top regular season scorer, and leading the league in goals for six straight seasons, (69/70 to 74/75).

Esposito was named to the NHL's First All-Star team six consecutive times (from 1969–74), and won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1969 and 1974. His Boston fans printed and displayed bumper stickers during his best years to celebrate his scoring: they read, "Jesus saves, Espo scores on the rebound." Esposito, while not a fast or graceful skater, was best known for his unmovable presence in front of the opposition net from which he could score from all angles. Esposito has said: “Scoring is easy. You simply stand in the slot, take your beating and shoot the puck into the net.”

During these great years, centering one of the most renowned forward lines in history with Hodge on right wing and left winger Wayne Cashman, Esposito and fellow superstar Bobby Orr led the Bruins to Stanley Cup victories in 1970 and 1972, and first-place finishes in the league in 1971, 1972 and 1974.

During 1970–71, Esposito shattered the record for most goals scored in a season when he finished up with 76. This record stood until 1982 when Wayne Gretzky scored his 77th, 78th and 79th goal against the Buffalo Sabres on February 24, 1982 at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. Esposito was on hand to present the game puck to Gretzky. Esposito also set the single season point-scoring record in 1971 with 152, a mark now held by Gretzky at 215. Only three other players have reached the 150 point-scoring plateau — Mario Lemieux 199, Steve Yzerman 155 and Bernie Nicholls 150 — and only Gretzky, Lemieux, Brett Hull, Teemu Selanne and Alexander Mogilny have scored 76 or more goals in a season. That season also saw Esposito shatter the single season mark for shots on goal with 550. This record still stands; in fact, only one other player has been within 100 shots of tying it (Alexander Ovechkin in 2008–09, in a season that was four games longer than when Esposito set the record).

After his performance in the Summit Series, where he was the inspirational leader for Team Canada and its leading scorer in the series, he won the 1972 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's outstanding male athlete of the year and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Esposito also scored the first goal of the series and he scored or assisted four times in the deciding game. During that series, his scolding of Canadian fans, who booed the national team after a 5–3 loss to the Soviet Union in Game Four, was credited with firing up his teammates:

''"If the Russian fans boo their players in Moscow like you people are booing us, I'll come back and apologize personally to every one of you, but I really don't think that will happen. We gave it and are doing our best. All of us guys are really disheartened. . . . We came out here because we love Canada. They're a good hockey team, and we don't know what we could do better, but I promise we will figure it out. But it's totally ridiculous — I don't think it is fair that we should be booed."''

He also played for Team Canada in the inaugural Canada Cup in 1976, on a line with Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Marcel Dionne. The following year, Esposito would represent Canada once more in the 1977 World Championships.

New York Rangers

In 1975–76, he and Carol Vadnais were traded to the New York Rangers for Brad Park, Joe Zanussi and Jean Ratelle.

While not as glittering an offensive force as in his glory days, as captain of the Rangers, Esposito led the Blueshirts in points each of his full seasons with the club and remained an effective scorer until his final season. The highlight of his years in New York was leading the Rangers to the Stanley Cup final in 1979 where at 37 years of age he finished third in postseason scoring.

On November 4, 1977, Esposito scored his 600th NHL goal at Vancouver, becoming the first player to reach that milestone in a Rangers uniform.

He retired in 1981, behind only Gordie Howe in career goals and total points, and third in assists to Howe and Stan Mikita.

Management

Esposito served as General Manager and coach of the Rangers for three years in the mid 1980s, during which he earned the nickname "Trader Phil" for the numerous transactions he made. During his tenure as GM, he made more trades than the Vancouver Canucks had made in the entire 1980s. While serving as GM, two of his most famous trades included the trade for the legendary Marcel Dionne and one which he sent a first round pick to the Quebec Nordiques as compensation for signing Michel Bergeron to be the Rangers' coach.

He moved on to found the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning but faced competition from the Compuware Group who wanted to place a team in nearby St. Petersburg. It was proposed to Esposito that he merge his bid with the Compuware Group to which he refused. His reputation and force of personality was widely credited with winning the expansion bid for Tampa Bay—in 1992, serving as the team's president and general manager until 1998. Compuware eventually purchased the Hartford Whalers.

In the Lightning's inaugural season, he made hockey history by signing Manon Rhéaume, making her the first woman to sign with an NHL team. He later admitted in his autobiography that signing Rheaume was only a publicity stunt for the new franchise and that she had no business being in the NHL. He remains the team’s radio color commentator, and also co-hosts a daily call-in show on XM Satellite Radio's ''Home Ice'' channel.

Esposito was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984. In December 1987, his #7 jersey was retired by the Boston Bruins in an emotional ceremony where the then-current wearer, superstar defenseman Ray Bourque, pulled off his #7 jersey to reveal his new number, 77—dramatically "surrendering" his old number in Esposito's favor. Esposito was "visibly moved" when Bourque showed the Boston Garden crowd his new number, which he used for the rest of his career. Esposito was also on hand in Boston to hand Bourque his retired number after the latter retired.

Esposito's younger brother Tony is also an Honoured Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Former NHL player Alexander Selivanov is Esposito's son-in-law.

Pop-culture references

He and New York Rangers teammates Ron Duguay, Dave Maloney and Anders Hedberg famously appeared in a TV commercial for Sasson designer jeans in 1977. In 1979, Esposito and Ranger teammates recorded a song written by Alan Thicke as a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation called the Hockey Sock Rock.

Phil Esposito is referred to in the Barenaked Ladies song "Celebrity", and the Fun Lovin' Criminals song "Smoke 'Em".

A shorter paraphrase of his speech during the Summit Series was delivered by Brent Butt on the "The Good Old Table Hockey Game" episode of ''Corner Gas''. Later in the same episode, a table hockey figure is shown to be fallen on the ice, it is remarked to be Esposito.

He has also made two appearances in the Showcase series ''Rent-a-Goalie'', first in a subplot involving the stealing of his DNA and second playing poker with his brother Tony.

Esposito has made several appearances on the Denis Leary created television show ''Rescue Me''. He plays Battalion Chief "Izzy" who also serves as the coach of the Fire Department hockey team.
